As temperatures climb, Health officials urges parents to sharpen water safety habits

With summer heat settling in across the region, health officials are reminding parents and caregivers to stay vigilant around water. Dr. Emanuele Maccalli of Kaweah Health recently addressed the community, sharing critical information on preventing drowning incidents as more families head to pools, lakes, and beaches.

Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death among young children, and the risk increases sharply during warmer months. Dr. Maccalli emphasized that supervision is the single most effective layer of protection. He advises that an adult should always maintain "touch supervision" for toddlers and weaker swimmers, meaning they should be within arm's reach at all times. Distractions like phones or conversations can lead to dangerous lapses in attention.

Beyond direct supervision, officials recommend installing proper barriers around home pools, such as four-sided fencing with self-latching gates. Learning CPR is another critical step, as immediate response can save lives while waiting for emergency services. Dr. Maccalli also urged parents to teach children basic water survival skills, including floating and treading water, as early as possible.

As temperatures continue to climb, the message is clear: water safety habits must become second nature. A moment of carelessness can lead to tragedy, but consistent precautions can keep families safe all summer long.
