State health officials confirmed Wednesday that a Michigan resident has tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, marking the first human case of the mosquito-borne virus in the state since 2021. The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services did not disclose the patient's county or condition, citing privacy concerns, but urged residents across the state to take protective measures seriously.
EEE is a rare but severe illness that can cause inflammation of the brain. About one in three people infected with the virus die, and many survivors suffer lasting neurological damage. Symptoms typically appear four to ten days after a mosquito bite and include sudden fever, chills, headache, vomiting, and fatigue. In more serious cases, confusion, seizures, or coma may develop.
Health officials emphasize that the risk is highest in late summer and early fall, when mosquito activity peaks. They recommend using EPA-registered insect repellents, wearing long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, and removing standing water around homes where mosquitoes breed. They also advise repairing window screens and using air conditioning when possible.
The announcement follows a year of heightened mosquito activity in several Midwestern states, and officials say they are monitoring for additional cases. While most people bitten by an infected mosquito never become ill, the severity of the disease makes prevention critical. Residents are encouraged to check local health department alerts and report any unusual bird deaths, as birds are a common carrier of the virus.
