Health officials confirmed that a person who showed pigs at the Kent County Youth Fair in early August has tested positive for a strain of swine flu. The case was announced after routine monitoring picked up the infection, and officials say the individual likely caught it from direct contact with animals at the fair.

The fair ran from August 1 through August 5, and the exhibitor was part of the swine barn activities. While the person is recovering, the case serves as a reminder that flu viruses can pass between pigs and people, especially in close quarters like fair barns. So far, no other exhibitors or fairgoers have reported symptoms, and health officials are not seeing signs of wider community spread.

Swine flu, also known as variant influenza, does not usually infect humans, but it happens occasionally. Symptoms look like regular flu: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, and fatigue. People at higher risk include young children, older adults, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.

Health officials are advising anyone who visited the fair and later developed flu-like symptoms to see a doctor and mention their exposure to pigs.
