Multiple baby goats had rabies at North Carolina mobile petting zoo, attendees urged to contact local health officials

Health officials in North Carolina are warning the public after several baby goats at a mobile petting zoo tested positive for rabies. The animals were part of a traveling exhibit that had recently made stops in multiple counties, and anyone who touched, fed, or was licked by the goats is being asked to contact their local health department immediately.

The infected kids were part of a small herd that visited public events over the past two weeks. Rabies is a viral disease that attacks the nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, but it can be prevented if treatment is started soon after exposure. Officials say the risk to the general public is low, but anyone who had direct contact with the animals should not wait to seek advice. Post-exposure prophylaxis, a series of shots, is highly effective when given promptly.

The petting zoo has been shut down while the investigation continues. Other animals on the premises are being tested, and the remaining goats have been placed under quarantine. Health officials are also reminding parents that young children are more likely to put their hands near their mouths after touching animals, which increases the risk of transmission. Anyone who visited the zoo on the affected dates is urged to call their doctor or county health office, even if they feel fine. Rabies symptoms can take weeks or even months to appear.
