New Jersey Grows Doula Training Network to 29 Approved Programs

New Jersey has expanded the number of doula training programs approved under NJ FamilyCare, bringing the total to 29 across the state. The move aims to widen access to doula support for residents covered by the state's Medicaid program, particularly pregnant people and new parents in underserved communities.

Doulas provide physical, emotional, and informational support before, during, and after childbirth. Studies have linked their care to lower rates of cesarean sections, fewer preterm births, and improved breastfeeding outcomes. By certifying more training organizations, state officials hope to build a larger and more diverse workforce that reflects the communities it serves.

The approved programs must meet specific curriculum and competency standards to qualify. Once trained and certified, doulas can seek reimbursement through NJ FamilyCare for services provided to eligible members. This reimbursement pathway is central to the expansion, since it allows doulas to earn a living while making their support more affordable for families.

Advocates have long argued that doula care can help address racial disparities in maternal health. New Jersey has faced scrutiny over high maternal mortality rates, especially among Black women, and expanding doula access is one part of a broader effort to improve outcomes.

Officials say the larger network of approved trainers should make it easier for aspiring doulas to find programs close to home and complete certification without traveling long distances. The state continues to encourage interested organizations to apply for approval as the program develops.
