Pennsylvania Survey Shows Most Students Report Positive Mental Health

A new state survey reveals that a majority of Pennsylvania students say their mental health is in good shape, though significant challenges remain for a sizable minority.

The 2025 Pennsylvania Youth Survey found that 76 percent of students reported good overall mental health, while 83 percent said they felt safe at school, according to state officials. The results offer a broad look at how young people across the commonwealth are faring on issues tied to emotional well-being and school climate.

The figures suggest that many students are coping well and feel secure in their learning environments. Still, the data leaves roughly one in four students who did not describe their mental health as good, a reminder that struggles with anxiety, depression, and stress continue to affect a meaningful share of young people.

State officials pointed to the findings as a tool for schools and communities to shape support programs. Districts can use the results to identify where students need more counseling, peer support, and early intervention. The survey also tracks perceptions of safety, which researchers link closely to academic performance and overall student health.

Advocates say the numbers should not lead to complacency. Even a strong majority reporting positive outcomes means thousands of students are dealing with difficulties that can go unnoticed. They urge continued investment in mental health services and open conversations that encourage students to seek help without stigma.
