California health officials are urging residents to avoid picking or eating any wild mushrooms following an extended and unusual bloom of toxic varieties across the state. The bloom has been linked to at least 50 reported illnesses and four confirmed deaths, according to state public health authorities.
The warning comes after a wet winter and spring created ideal growing conditions for dangerous fungi, including the death cap mushroom and the western destroying angel. These species contain potent toxins that can cause severe liver and kidney damage, often leading to death within days of ingestion. Officials say many of the victims mistook the poisonous mushrooms for edible varieties commonly found in grocery stores.
Health experts emphasize that there is no simple test to distinguish safe mushrooms from deadly ones. Cooking, boiling, or freezing does not remove the toxins. Symptoms of poisoning typically appear six to 12 hours after eating and include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Without immediate medical treatment, organ failure can occur.
The California Department of Public Health advises people to only consume mushrooms purchased from reliable markets or growers. Anyone who suspects mushroom poisoning should call poison control immediately or seek emergency care. The agency also warns pet owners to keep animals away from wild mushrooms, as dogs and other pets are also at risk.
