Rising Health Costs Hit Medical Workers Hard as Premiums Climb

Health insurance costs for employers are projected to rise at the fastest pace since 2003, and the strain is being felt even inside the medical profession. Nurses, doctors and staff at clinics and hospitals are confronting the same affordability problems as everyone else, despite working on the front lines of the health care system.

Premiums and out of pocket expenses are eating up a growing share of household budgets. For many medical workers, that means difficult tradeoffs. Some are delaying their own care, skipping appointments or rationing prescriptions. Others are choosing between insurance plans with higher deductibles and lower monthly payments, hoping they will not need expensive treatment during the year.

Employers are also struggling. Medical practices and hospital systems face rising claims costs and must decide how much of the increase to pass on to employees. Many are shifting more costs to workers through higher premiums, larger deductibles and narrower networks.

The result is a paradox. The people trained to care for patients are finding it harder to afford care themselves. Analysts warn that if the trend continues, recruitment and retention in health care could suffer, adding pressure to a workforce already stretched thin.
