San Diego woman, 41, has arms and legs amputated after routine checkup went horribly wrong

A 41-year-old woman from Spring Valley, California, is recovering after a routine medical appointment in May took a devastating turn. The woman, whose name has not been released, went in for a standard heart checkup, but doctors soon discovered a life-threatening condition known as Type A aortic dissection. That condition, which involves a tear in the inner layer of the aorta, can cause blood to flow between the layers of the vessel wall, leading to a rupture or organ damage if not treated immediately.

According to family members, the woman had no major symptoms before the checkup. She was active and healthy, which made the sudden diagnosis even more shocking. Within hours of the discovery, she was rushed into emergency surgery. The operation saved her life, but complications followed. Reduced blood flow to her extremities caused severe tissue damage, and doctors were left with no choice but to amputate both arms and both legs.

Her family has set up a fundraising page to help cover medical costs and home modifications. They describe her as a fighter who is now learning to use prosthetics and adjusting to a completely different way of life. The ordeal has also raised questions about how quickly a routine visit can uncover hidden, fatal risks. Medical experts note that aortic dissection is rare but often fatal, with symptoms like sudden chest or back pain. In some cases, it can be silent until it becomes critical.

The woman remains in a rehabilitation facility and is said to be in stable condition. Her family is asking for privacy but also for support as she begins the long road to recovery. They hope her story reminds others to pay attention to their heart health, even when they feel fine.
