Golden State Valkyries head coach Natalie Nakase spoke publicly about the medical episode that caused her to collapse on the court late in her team's series-clinching victory on Friday. Nakase said the incident stemmed from a combination of dehydration and a drop in blood pressure, which led to her losing her balance near the bench as the game wound down.
She explained that she had not been drinking enough fluids during the day and that the stress of a tightly contested playoff-style game contributed to the episode. Medical staff attended to her quickly, and she was able to recover without being taken to a hospital. Nakase said she has since consulted with doctors and is making changes to her routine.
Those changes include carrying a water bottle at all times, eating more regularly before games, and asking her assistant coaches to help monitor her condition on the sideline. She also plans to wear a device that tracks her heart rate and hydration levels during practices and games.
Nakase downplayed concerns about her long-term health, saying the scare was a warning she intends to take seriously. She added that her players and staff have been supportive and that she feels strong enough to continue leading the team. The Valkyries are set to begin their next round of games later this week.
