A recent analysis has shifted the conversation around drinking and health, focusing not just on how much people drink, but on what they are actually consuming. The findings suggest that the type of alcohol matters more than previously thought, with wine showing a distinct advantage over beer and spirits.
Researchers looked at data from a large group of older adults and tracked their drinking habits alongside their health outcomes over many years. The key result: people who drank wine in moderation had a lower risk of dying from cardiovascular disease compared to those who drank beer or liquor. In fact, the study found that moderate wine drinkers saw a significant reduction in heart-related deaths, even when total alcohol intake was similar across groups.
The reason may lie in the compounds found in wine, particularly polyphenols and antioxidants that come from grapes. These substances are known to support blood vessel health and reduce inflammation, effects that are not found in distilled spirits or most beers. The study does not suggest that non-drinkers should start drinking, but for those who already consume alcohol, choosing wine could make a real difference.
The authors stress that moderation is still the rule, and heavy drinking cancels out any potential benefit. But the takeaway is clear: when it comes to alcohol and the heart, the choice of drink deserves as much attention as the amount.
