Yellow heat health warning issued for South West

The UK Health Security Agency has issued a yellow heat health alert for the South West, with the warning set to run from 10:00 BST on Saturday morning until 09:00 on Tuesday. The alert covers the whole region, including major urban areas and coastal towns, as forecasters predict a spell of unusually warm weather for this time of year.

Temperatures are expected to climb well above the seasonal average, with some inland spots possibly reaching the high twenties. The agency says the main concern is for older people, young children, and those with existing health conditions, as the warm nights will offer little relief. Local health services are being asked to check on vulnerable patients, while care homes and hospitals have been told to review their cooling plans.

The Met Office notes that the heat will build gradually over the weekend, peaking on Sunday and Monday before a cooler front moves in from the west. People are advised to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water, and keep homes cool by closing curtains in the afternoon. Those working outdoors or travelling on public transport should take extra breaks. The warning does not mean a heatwave is officially declared, but it signals that the warm spell could have a real impact on health and daily routines. Residents are urged to check on neighbours who live alone, and to make sure pets have shade and water. The alert is expected to be lifted by Tuesday morning as temperatures return to normal.
