Apple is making a serious push into the health and fitness tracking space, and its latest updates to the Health app are giving dedicated wearable companies something to worry about. The new features lean heavily on artificial intelligence to deliver insights that previously required a subscription service or a specialized device.
For years, serious fitness enthusiasts have relied on gadgets like the Whoop band, Oura ring, or Garmin watches to get detailed data about recovery, sleep quality, and strain. These companies built their businesses on the idea that Apple's built-in health tools were too basic for anyone who wanted real depth. That argument is getting harder to make.
The updated Health app appears to process data from the iPhone and Apple Watch in smarter ways, offering personalized recommendations and trend analysis without needing a separate subscription. If the accuracy holds up, it could convince casual and intermediate users to skip the extra hardware entirely.
That said, dedicated devices still have advantages. Longer battery life, more precise sensors, and screen-free tracking remain appealing for athletes and people who dislike charging yet another gadget every night. Apple has not solved every problem.
Still, the gap is closing. For someone who already owns an iPhone and an Apple Watch, paying a monthly fee for a second ecosystem becomes a tougher sell. The real test will come when users compare the insights side by side and decide whether the extra band on their wrist is worth keeping.
