Bat tests positive for rabies in Haddonfield, health officials say

A bat discovered in Haddonfield, New Jersey, has tested positive for rabies, according to an official announcement from the Camden County Department of Health and Human Services on Friday. The finding has prompted local health officials to issue a public advisory, urging residents to exercise caution and avoid any contact with bats or other wild animals.

The infected bat was located in a residential area of the borough, though officials have not disclosed the exact address to protect the privacy of the homeowner who reported the animal. The bat was subsequently collected and sent for laboratory testing, which confirmed the presence of the rabies virus. Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system and is almost always fatal once symptoms appear, making immediate medical attention critical for anyone potentially exposed.

Health authorities emphasize that rabies can be transmitted through bites, scratches, or direct contact with the saliva of an infected animal. Residents are strongly advised not to handle bats or any wildlife that appears sick, disoriented, or unusually aggressive. If a bat is found inside a home, officials recommend confining the animal to a single room and contacting animal control or the health department for safe removal.

The Camden County Department of Health and Human Services is working with local animal control to monitor the situation and remind pet owners to ensure their dogs, cats, and ferrets are up to date on rabies vaccinations. Anyone who believes they may have had contact with this bat or any other suspicious animal should seek medical evaluation immediately and report the incident to the health department.
