Sonoma County Indian Health Project secures expansion space as large clinic project delayed

The Sonoma County Indian Health Project has signed a lease on additional space in Santa Rosa to ease pressure on its current operations, stepping in as a stopgap while a much larger planned clinic remains stuck in delays. The organization, which provides medical, dental, and behavioral health services to Native American communities and other local residents, said the new location will allow it to expand appointments and reduce wait times that have grown over the past year.

The temporary site, located a few miles from the main facility, will offer primary care and lab services starting next month. Officials described the move as necessary relief, not a substitute for the long-awaited flagship project. That larger clinic, originally slated to break ground in 2024, has faced permitting issues, rising construction costs, and contractor shortages. No new completion date has been set, though leadership says they are still committed to the full-scale build.

In the meantime, the leased space gives the health project roughly 8,000 additional square feet. Staff will be shifted there, and some services will be reorganized so that urgent care and chronic disease management can run in parallel. Patients have reported difficulty getting same-day appointments, and the organization hopes this expansion will cut average booking times from three weeks down to under ten days.

The health project serves over 9,000 patients annually, many of whom rely on it as their only source of care. Tribal leaders have pushed for faster action on the permanent clinic, citing the region's growing Native population and the strain on local emergency rooms. For now, the leased site is a pragmatic answer, though everyone involved acknowledges it is far from the final solution.
