Crews in Garden Grove are still working to keep a damaged chemical tank from overheating as the emergency situation remains under close watch. Elaine Bernal, a lecturer in chemistry and biochemistry at California State University, Long Beach, spoke about what the cooling efforts actually accomplish and addressed growing public worries.
The tank, which was compromised earlier this week, has prompted a large response from local hazmat teams and fire officials. Bernal explained that keeping the tank cool is critical to prevent a runaway reaction, which could release toxic fumes or even cause an explosion. She noted that the chemicals involved are highly reactive when exposed to heat or moisture, making temperature control the top priority.
Residents in nearby areas have raised concerns about air quality and potential long-term health effects. Bernal advised that while the immediate danger is being managed, people should follow evacuation orders and stay informed through official channels. She also emphasized that the monitoring equipment in place is designed to detect any dangerous changes in the tank's condition.
The situation remains fluid, and authorities have not yet given a timeline for when the tank will be fully stabilized.
