Paul Biya, the oldest head of state in the world, has returned to Cameroon after spending more than two months abroad, marking the longest stretch he has been away from the country during his 44 years in power. The 93-year-old president left in June for what officials described as a short trip to Europe, but his extended stay triggered widespread speculation about his health and ability to govern.
Biya landed in the capital, Yaounde, late on Monday, according to state media, which showed footage of him stepping off a plane and greeting officials. No detailed medical update was provided, and the government has repeatedly dismissed rumors of serious illness as baseless. Still, his prolonged absence fueled rare public debate in a country where political opposition is tightly controlled.
During his time away, Cameroon faced a cholera outbreak, ongoing violence in the English-speaking regions, and a deepening economic strain. Critics say the president's silence on these issues while abroad left a leadership vacuum. Supporters, however, insist Biya remains fit and in control, pointing to his return as proof that he is still active.
The exact nature of his stay in Europe was never disclosed. Some reports suggested a routine checkup, while others hinted at more serious treatment. The presidency has not released a full itinerary or medical report, which has done little to quiet the chatter. For now, the focus shifts to whether Biya will resume public duties quickly or retreat into a quieter schedule, as he has done in recent years. His return does little to resolve the larger question of succession, a topic that remains taboo in official circles.
