Curious Life Certificate Program Aims to Strengthen Mental Health Through Personal Growth

A professional actor, singer, and producer, Ryder McDaniel (Communication ’24), finds himself applying lessons from Northwestern University far beyond the stage. While his theatre major provided essential performance skills, McDaniel credits a lesser-known program with shaping his approach to life and work: the Curious Life Certificate.

This personal development initiative, based in the McCormick School of Engineering, is designed to help students build resilience, self-awareness, and purpose—qualities increasingly recognized as vital for combating mental health challenges. The certificate encourages participants to explore interdisciplinary topics, engage in reflective practices, and develop habits that support long-term well-being.

McDaniel notes that the program taught him to approach setbacks with curiosity rather than fear, a mindset he now uses daily in the unpredictable entertainment industry. "It’s not just about career skills," he says. "It’s about understanding yourself and building a foundation that protects your mental health."

The Curious Life Certificate combines workshops, mentorship, and experiential learning. Students are guided to examine their values, set meaningful goals, and cultivate practices like mindfulness and gratitude. Organizers emphasize that the program is open to all majors, recognizing that personal development is essential for every field.

As mental health concerns rise among young adults, such initiatives offer a proactive model. By equipping students with tools for self-reflection and growth, the certificate aims to reduce burnout and foster a more balanced, fulfilling life—both during college and beyond.
