A new artificial intelligence tool developed by researchers in Boston claims to estimate your biological age from a simple facial photo. The system, created by scientists at a leading Boston research institution, analyzes features like skin texture, wrinkles, and facial symmetry to calculate how old your body really is - which may differ from your chronological age.
The tool works by comparing thousands of facial data points against known aging patterns. Researchers say the AI can spot subtle signs of accelerated aging that might indicate underlying health risks. A person who looks older than their actual age may have a higher likelihood of developing age-related diseases, according to the study.
NewsCenter 5 reporter Jessica Brown put the technology to the test. She uploaded a selfie and received a biological age estimate that she described as surprisingly accurate. "It was a little unsettling to see a number that didn't match my birthday," Brown said, "but the researchers explained that lifestyle factors like stress, sleep, and sun exposure can all show up on your face."
The team behind the tool hopes it could one day be used as a quick, non-invasive health screening method. Instead of waiting for blood tests or doctor visits, a person could snap a photo and get a warning sign if their biological age is climbing faster than expected. The researchers caution, however, that the tool is not a diagnostic device and should not replace medical advice. They are currently seeking FDA approval for broader clinical use.
