RALEIGH -- People in North Carolina dealing with mental illness can currently be ordered by a judge to receive treatment inside a psychiatric facility. That process might soon get more flexible. A state lawmaker is expected to introduce a proposal on Tuesday that would encourage mental health treatment without requiring a person to be committed to a hospital against their will.
The idea is to give people more options before they reach a crisis point where a court steps in. Supporters of the plan say forcing someone into a locked facility can be traumatic and often makes it harder for them to trust the system later. Instead, the proposal would push for voluntary outpatient care, counseling, medication management, and other community-based services.
The lawmaker behind the bill argues that the current system is too rigid. It often leaves people with a choice between getting no help at all or being locked up. This new approach would aim to catch problems earlier and keep people in their homes and jobs while still getting the support they need.
Critics have raised concerns about whether voluntary programs will be enough for people who are a danger to themselves or others. But backers say the goal is to reduce the number of involuntary commitments and free up space in psychiatric facilities for those who truly need round-the-clock care. The proposal is expected to face debate in committee before any vote.
