No one in health care should be called a ‘provider’

No one in health care should be called a ‘provider’

A leading medical society is calling for a fundamental change in language within the healthcare system. The American College of Physicians (ACP) contends that the ubiquitous term "provider" detrimentally reframes the sacred patient-physician relationship as a mere commercial exchange.

The organization argues that this generic, business-oriented term obscures the extensive training, clinical judgment, and deep personal commitment inherent to medical professions. Using the word "provider" groups physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and others into an indistinct category, potentially confusing patients about who is overseeing their care and undermining the specific expertise each professional brings.

This linguistic shift, according to the ACP, reflects a broader systemic move that prioritizes productivity metrics and financial transactions over holistic, patient-centered care. They emphasize that precise titles like "doctor," "physician," or "registered nurse" foster clarity, trust, and respect. The push is part of an effort to reaffirm medicine as a profession built on a covenant of trust, rather than a service industry driven solely by consumer dynamics. The ACP encourages all healthcare institutions and professionals to adopt more precise and respectful terminology in both documentation and daily practice.
