This linguistic shift, according to the ACP, reflects a broader systemic move that prioritizes productivity metrics and financial transactions over holistic, patient-centered care. They emphasize that precise titles like "doctor," "physician," or "registered nurse" foster clarity, trust, and respect. The push is part of an effort to reaffirm medicine as a profession built on a covenant of trust, rather than a service industry driven solely by consumer dynamics. The ACP encourages all healthcare institutions and professionals to adopt more precise and respectful terminology in both documentation and daily practice.
