The World Health Organization has stated that there is currently no evidence of a larger hantavirus outbreak spreading beyond the reported cases. However, the agency's director warned that the situation remains fluid and that additional confirmed cases could still emerge in the coming days.
Speaking from Geneva, the WHO chief emphasized that health authorities are closely monitoring all potential contacts and have deployed rapid response teams to the affected regions. Hantavirus, which is typically transmitted through contact with rodent droppings or urine, can cause severe respiratory illness in humans. The current cluster of cases has raised concerns due to its unusual presentation, but officials stress that containment measures are already in place.
The WHO is urging local populations to avoid exposure to rodents and to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, or shortness of breath develop. While the risk of a widespread epidemic remains low, the agency is not ruling out the possibility of sporadic infections. "We are not seeing a pattern of sustained human-to-human transmission," the director noted, "but we must remain vigilant as the investigation continues."
