Philadelphia health officials are urging patients of a Center City dental practice to get tested for hepatitis and HIV after an investigation uncovered unsanitary conditions. The Philadelphia Department of Public Health issued the warning for individuals who received treatment at Smiles at Rittenhouse Square, a dental office located on Walnut Street.
The investigation began after a complaint led inspectors to the facility, where they found what they described as "unsanitary practices" that could have put patients at risk. According to the health department, the issues involved improper sterilization of dental equipment and failure to follow standard infection control procedures. While the exact timeline of the potential exposure is unclear, officials believe it may have occurred over an extended period.
The department is now recommending that any patient who visited the practice for dental work get tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV as a precaution. These viruses can be transmitted through contaminated instruments or surfaces if proper cleaning protocols are not followed. Health officials emphasized that the risk of transmission is low, but testing is the safest course of action.
The dental practice has been ordered to cease operations until it can demonstrate compliance with health and safety regulations. The city has not released the names of any staff members or owners involved, and the investigation remains ongoing. Patients with questions or concerns are advised to contact the health department directly for guidance.
