Shoppers who regularly buy food at dollar stores might be saving money at the register, but new research suggests those savings come at a measurable cost to their well-being. A study published this week found a clear connection between the quality of groceries sold at these discount retailers and worse health outcomes in the communities where they are the primary food source.
The research, which analyzed purchasing patterns and health data across several low-income urban neighborhoods, showed that people who relied heavily on dollar stores for their meals had higher rates of diet-related conditions like hypertension, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. The problem is not just the lack of fresh produce, which is often absent or spoiled on arrival. It is also the overwhelming presence of highly processed items, sugary drinks, and shelf-stable snacks that are engineered to be cheap but are dense in sodium, refined flour, and added sugars.
According to the authors, dollar stores have expanded rapidly in areas that lack full-service supermarkets, often becoming the only accessible option for families without cars. While these stores fill a real gap in food access, the study argues that they are not a substitute for proper nutrition. The researchers compared health records from neighborhoods with a high concentration of dollar stores against similar areas with grocery stores and found that the former had a 20 percent higher incidence of diet-related chronic illness.
The findings add to a growing debate about the role of discount chains in the American food system. Some advocates say the stores should be pressured to stock healthier items, but the study's lead author notes that the business model itself is the issue. "You cannot sell a fresh apple for the same price as a bag of chips and still make a profit," she said. "The entire system is built around ultra-processed goods." Until that changes, the paper concludes, the cheapest food will continue to be the most costly for public health.
