Rural Connecticut Hospitals Awarded $46 Million in Federal Health Grants

Four rural hospitals in Connecticut have received a combined $46 million in federal funding aimed at strengthening health care services in underserved communities. Charlotte Hungerford, Day Kimball, Sharon and Windham Hospitals were awarded the funds through the U.S. Rural Health Transformation Program.

The grants are intended to help the facilities upgrade equipment, expand access to care and address staffing shortages that have strained rural providers in recent years. Rural hospitals often operate on thin margins and serve populations that are older, sicker and more geographically isolated than those in urban areas. The new funding is expected to support infrastructure improvements and programs designed to keep essential services available close to home.

Officials representing the hospitals said the money will help them maintain operations that might otherwise be at risk. Several of the facilities have faced financial pressure as costs rise and patient volumes fluctuate. The federal program specifically targets institutions that serve as the primary source of emergency, inpatient and outpatient care for their regions.

Community leaders welcomed the announcement, noting that losing any of these hospitals would force residents to travel long distances for treatment.
