A new study reveals that college students experiencing the highest levels of psychological distress are turning to generative AI for mental health support at significantly higher rates than their peers. The research, co-led by investigators at Mass General Brigham, surveyed thousands of students and found that 18% of respondents had used AI tools like chatbots for emotional or mental health needs. Among those reporting severe anxiety, depression, or suicidal thoughts, the usage rate jumped to nearly one in three.
The findings highlight a growing reliance on AI as a first-line resource, often replacing traditional counseling or hotlines. Researchers noted that students cited convenience, anonymity, and immediate availability as key reasons for turning to AI. However, the study also raises concerns about the quality and safety of such interactions. Unlike licensed therapists, AI models lack the ability to recognize crisis situations or provide tailored interventions. Many students reported that the AI responses felt generic or failed to address their specific concerns.
Experts warn that while AI can offer a low-barrier entry point for help, it should not replace professional care. The study underscores the need for universities to integrate AI tools into broader mental health strategies, ensuring they are used as supplements rather than substitutes. As mental health crises rise on campuses, the data suggests that the most vulnerable students are already seeking digital solutions, whether or not those solutions are designed for their needs.
