The rise of Zyn-like pouches for sleep, health, focus, teeth

The rise of Zyn-like pouches for sleep, health, focus, teeth

The success of Zyn nicotine pouches has sparked a wave of copycat products that promise to deliver everything from better sleep to sharper focus, all through a small pouch tucked inside the lip. Americans are now putting pouches in their mouths for reasons that have nothing to do with nicotine addiction.

A growing number of startups are selling pouches infused with melatonin, caffeine, vitamins, and even probiotics. The pitch is simple: no smoke, no vapor, no sticky gum. Just a discreet pouch that dissolves or releases ingredients slowly through the cheek lining. Brands like VELO, Lucy, and newer entrants such as Lifted and Noon are targeting people who want a quick mental boost or a calm wind-down without a drink or a pill.

The trend taps into a broader cultural shift toward "functional" consumables. Consumers are looking for convenience and control. A melatonin pouch before bed, a caffeine pouch during a long meeting, or a vitamin B12 pouch for energy. The format is especially popular among people who avoid smoking or vaping but still want the ritual of placing something in their mouth.

Dentists, however, are raising concerns. Many of these pouches contain sugar alcohols or acidic flavorings that can erode enamel or irritate gums over time. Some users report gum recession or mouth sores after regular use. Health experts also warn that the rapid absorption through the oral mucosa can deliver ingredients more intensely than intended, especially with melatonin or caffeine.

Regulators are starting to take notice. The FDA has not approved most of these pouches as drugs or dietary supplements, leaving them in a gray area. Some products make explicit health claims on their packaging, which could invite scrutiny.

Despite the risks, the market is growing fast. Industry analysts predict that the non-nicotine pouch category could reach several hundred million dollars in the next few years. For now, the pouch is no longer just for quitting smoking. It is becoming a daily habit for a new kind of wellness.
