Tracy residents worry about health risks after warehouse fire

Residents in Tracy are voicing growing concerns about lingering smoke and potential toxic chemicals in the air following the massive fire at the Medline warehouse earlier this week. The blaze, which sent a thick plume of black smoke across the city, has left many questioning the long-term safety of their environment.

Local families report experiencing headaches, sore throats, and burning eyes since the fire started. "The air still smells like burning plastic," said Maria Santos, a mother of two who lives less than a mile from the warehouse. "We kept our windows shut, but I worry about what my kids are breathing in." The warehouse stored medical supplies, including plastics, gloves, and packaging materials, which can release hazardous compounds when burned.

City officials have stated that air quality tests are being conducted, but results have not been fully released. Some residents feel the response has been too slow. "They told us to shelter in place, but no one has explained what was actually in that smoke," said local teacher David Chen. "We need transparency, not just reassurances."

Health experts warn that smoke from industrial fires can contain fine particulate matter and volatile organic compounds, which may cause respiratory issues or aggravate existing conditions like asthma. Community groups are now calling for independent air monitoring and a public health briefing. Until then, many Tracy residents say they will continue wearing masks outdoors and keeping children inside, uncertain of what the air holds.
