As floodwaters recede in the Northeast and communities in the South assess tornado damage, state health officials are issuing a stern warning to residents: the period after a storm carries significant risks, and caution must be the top priority during cleanup.
The immediate dangers of high winds and rushing water have passed, but hazards remain hidden in the debris. Officials emphasize that downed power lines are an extreme threat and should always be treated as if they are live; they must be reported to utility companies immediately. Chainsaws and other power tools, often unused for long periods, require careful handling to avoid kickbacks and lacerations.
Furthermore, flooding introduces severe health threats. Standing water can be contaminated with sewage, chemicals, and sharp objects. Anyone working in flood areas should wear sturdy boots, heavy gloves, and protective eyewear. Generators and fuel-burning equipment must be operated outdoors and far from windows to prevent deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.
Physical strain and heat stress are also major concerns during strenuous cleanup work. Teams are advised to take frequent breaks, stay hydrated, and use the buddy system, especially when moving heavy objects. Protecting one's health now is essential for the long recovery ahead.
