Every May, Special Olympics marks Fitness and Sport Month, a time to highlight how physical activity boosts health, performance, and overall well-being for athletes. This year, I sat down with Muaz Khan, a Special Olympics Pakistan athlete who now serves as a Fitness Captain, to hear about his personal journey.
Muaz did not start out thinking about leadership or titles. He simply wanted to get stronger and feel better. Early on, he noticed that consistent training helped him not only in competition but also in daily life. He had more energy, fewer injuries, and a sharper focus. That shift from just playing a sport to actively managing his own fitness became the turning point.
When the Fitness Captain program was introduced, Muaz saw a chance to share what he had learned. The role asks athletes to lead by example, encouraging teammates to warm up properly, stay hydrated, and listen to their bodies. For Muaz, it was a natural fit. He now runs group stretches before practice and checks in with younger athletes who might be struggling with motivation.
He says the biggest lesson is that being an athlete is not just about winning medals. It is about building habits that last. Muaz believes that a healthy athlete is a better teammate, a stronger competitor, and a happier person. His advice to anyone starting out is simple: start small, stay consistent, and remember that fitness is a tool for life, not just for game day.
