Bradford A&E services downgraded by health watchdog

A health watchdog has downgraded the accident and emergency services at Bradford Royal Infirmary following an inspection that uncovered significant concerns. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) found that patients faced long waits for treatment, with some experiencing delays that posed risks to their safety. Staffing pressures were also identified as a major issue, with the emergency department struggling to cope with demand.

Inspectors reported that the A&E unit was often overcrowded, and there were not enough senior doctors available to oversee patient care, particularly during peak times. The rating for the service was dropped from "requires improvement" to "inadequate," the lowest possible grade. The hospital trust has acknowledged the findings and said it is working to address the problems.

The CQC highlighted that while staff were dedicated and tried their best, the system itself was under severe strain. Patients with serious conditions sometimes waited too long for assessment and treatment. The watchdog also noted that the environment in the department was not always clean or safe, with equipment not always stored properly. The hospital's leadership has been told to make urgent improvements to protect patients and bring the service back up to standard.
