Do this, not that: Health warnings, tips ahead of 4-day heat wave

As a severe four-day heat wave settles over the region, health officials are urging residents to take immediate precautions to avoid heat-related illness and injuries. Drawing from guidance established by the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council, experts emphasize that preparation and common sense are the best defenses against extreme temperatures.

First, stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and sugary drinks, as these can dehydrate you faster. Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink.

Second, limit outdoor activity. If you must be outside, schedule tasks for the early morning or late evening when temperatures are lower. Take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning. Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing. A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are also essential.

Third, never leave children or pets in a parked car. The temperature inside a vehicle can rise nearly 20 degrees Fahrenheit in just 10 minutes, even with the windows cracked open. This is a leading cause of heatstroke deaths in children.

Fourth, check on vulnerable neighbors, especially older adults, young children, and those with chronic health conditions. Make sure they have access to cool spaces and hydration.

Finally, know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Symptoms include heavy sweating, weakness, cold and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, and nausea. If someone stops sweating, has red and hot skin, a strong rapid pulse, or loses consciousness, call for emergency help immediately and move them to a cooler place. Do not give them fluids if they are unconscious.

Stay cool, stay safe, and look out for one another during this dangerous weather.
