Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio operate the three largest county jail systems in Texas. But so far this year, Bexar County has recorded the highest number of deaths among inmates in custody, according to data collected by the Texas Jail Project. That grim statistic has pushed a coalition of local nonprofits to call for immediate changes at the Bexar County jail, citing both the rising death toll and ongoing concerns about medical care.
Advocates argue that the facility is failing to provide adequate healthcare to detainees, many of whom arrive with chronic conditions or mental health issues. They point to a pattern of delayed responses to medical emergencies and insufficient staffing as contributing factors. The groups are urging county commissioners to fund independent oversight and to require public reporting of all serious incidents.
The call for reform comes as the jail population remains high, putting additional strain on resources. While sheriff's office officials have defended their protocols, the nonprofit coalition insists that without structural changes, more lives will be lost. They are pushing for a third-party review of medical services and a clear timeline for implementing recommendations. For now, the debate centers on whether the county will act before the next tragedy.
