Shelby voters will see two tax renewal measures on the Nov. 3 ballot, both of which city officials say are necessary to keep essential services running.
The first renewal supports the health department, which relies on the tax revenue to fund its daily operations. The second renewal is directed to the city parks department, which also depends on the funding to maintain programs and facilities.
Both measures are renewals rather than new taxes, meaning residents would continue paying the same rate they already pay if the measures pass. City officials have stressed that the funding is not additional revenue but a continuation of existing support that both departments count on to operate.
The health department uses the money for public health services that residents rely on throughout the year. The parks department applies its share toward upkeep and programming at city parks.
Because both departments require the tax revenue to function, the outcome of the vote will directly affect their ability to provide services. Residents can cast their ballots on Nov. 3.
