Small breaks can make a big difference for mothers, and according to Mass General Brigham psychiatrist Dr. Ash Nadkarni, the concept of "me time" is not just a luxury but a mental health necessity. Many mothers feel guilty about stepping away from their responsibilities, but Dr. Nadkarni explains that taking even short, intentional pauses helps reset the nervous system. When a mom is constantly giving to others without a moment to herself, stress hormones like cortisol stay elevated, leading to burnout, irritability, and emotional exhaustion.
Dr. Nadkarni points out that "me time" does not have to mean a full spa day or a weekend away. It can be as simple as sitting quietly with a cup of coffee, reading a few pages of a book, or taking a solo walk around the block. The key is that the time is truly for the mother, free from childcare duties or household tasks. These small resets allow the brain to shift from a state of constant vigilance to one of relaxation, which improves mood and patience.
The psychiatrist also warns against comparing "me time" to what others might do. Some moms might find peace in exercise, while others prefer a hot bath or a podcast. The important thing is consistency. Even five to ten minutes daily can lower anxiety and help mothers feel more centered. For moms who struggle to find the time, Dr. Nadkarni suggests starting with a simple boundary: telling family members that for a set period, she is unavailable. Over time, this habit can protect mental health and strengthen the ability to care for others without losing oneself.
